Over the years I’ve done oil sketches as color studies prior to undertaking the formal portrait. Done quickly, more like play than work, these help me explore color combinations which express the essential nature of the subject, and also excite the viewer. The sketches turned out to be a terrific devise for relaxing and warming up for formal studio sessions — a little play before a lot of work. And what could be more playful than our beloved dogs, our crazy cats …. and the occasional feisty rooster?
